  • summary: The OKLMA consists of two clusters of stations in central and southwestern Oklahoma which passively monitor radio waves in the 60-66 MHz very high frequency (VHF) band (previously Channel 3) for emissions from the lightning breakdown process. Each sensor records the timing of peak VHF amplitudes within 80 microsecond sampling windows. The source of each high-powered VHF signal is then triangulated in 3D space and time using a Marquart least squares algorithm with high accuracy (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2004JD004549) and flash detection efficiency (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2016JD025159) within roughly 100 km of each cluster of stations. Data is processed from each cluster of stations semi-independently then combined for a single, wide-coverage monitor of VHF emissions by lightning.
